Valentine’s Day – Film Review

(124 MINS, CERT 12)

Director: Gary Marshall
Starring: Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner

Available now on DVD, sees the return of Pretty Woman director Gary Marshall, producing a whole new rom-com for the twenty-first century, in the style of the British hit Love Actually, with a star-studded cast to tag along with in Valentine’s Day.

Starring a number of top names, including Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Alba, Valentines Day revolves around the twenty-four hours that make up the most romantic date on the calendar, 14th February. Focusing on a series of individual and shared lives from a mixture of generations, ages and sexualities, Valentine’s Day pulls off a realistic in sight into the effects this “special” date has on an individual, single, married or divorced, presenting audiences to an underlying message that Valentine’s Day is not all about red roses and sweet chocolates come the day.

Connected to one another be it a distant relation, family member or friend, the star filled cast of Valentine’s Day offer a mixture of laughs and emotions throughout the 124 minute run-time, giving any audience member a character to relate to from the very beginning. Having already witnessed a British version of what Valentine’s Day has to offer, in Richard Curtis’ 2003 hit Love Actually, it is interesting to see how issues which are the same all over the world are presented depending on character, culture or environment.

Although the film runs on for a little longer than needed, with a few cliché’s getting in the way of key story lines, Valentine’s Day is a film which will gain attention during the romantic period every year, yet will bask in the shadows of the UK’s up and coming DVD releases in the following months. If you’re looking for a soft-hearted story to watch with your partner, or simply a fan of what we have already produced with Love Actually, Valentine’s Day will suite your every needs, and will not disappoint in the romance department.
