Raking in just under $108 million in the U.S, 2011’s Paranormal Activity 3 proved to be just as popular as its predecessors when it was released in October 2011.
However it came as no surprise when Paramount Pictures this week announced a fourth outing in the franchise is due for release just in time for Halloween 2012.
The found-footage series has become Paramount’s yearly high flyer, taking it from a low-budget original, released in 2007, to a franchise earning over $80 million Stateside alone.
Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, last year’s Paranormal Activity 3 took the series into the past, looking at what could be considered the series origins story. Thus leaving the question open as to whether Joost and Schulman will return for another round of directing.
Speaking to MTV News, Schulman said: “I had a blast and I’d do it again,” later joking: “We have some ideas. It’s going to be just drawings – calligraphy and watercolours. And set in the 1880’s.”
While the question remains as to whether the next outing will follow a new direction or stick to its original narrative, Paranormal Activity 4 is sure to have eager fans rushing to the cinema this Halloween.
